Sony have now integrated backwards-compatibility with Top 100 PS4 games. PlayStation’s Mark Cerny – has announced that “almost all” games will be available at launch – games with the highest playtime will be nominated.

The eager question is will it allow games from previous generations to be compatible? Based on the announcement, the presentation only mentioned PS4 games.

“Running PS4 and PS4 titles at boosted frequencies has also added complexity,” Cerny said. “The boost is truly massive this time around and some game code can’t handle it. Testing has to be done on a title-by-title basis. Results are excellent, though. We recently took a look at the top 100 PlayStation 4 titles as ranked by playtime, and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PlayStation 5.”

“Once backwards compatibility is in the console, it’s in,” Cerny said. “It’s not as if a cost-down will remove backwards compatibility like it did on PlayStation 3.”

Mark Cerny is outlining when the release of PS3 was announced, Sony’s PlayStation announced that it would be backward-compatible with PS2 but later had been removed (the PS2 chipset was integrated into PS3s consoles). However, this will not be an issue with the PS5, once that hardware is in – Cerny assures this will not be removed.
